Navigating food insecurity: Families' coping strategies, challenges, and insights for educators

Abstract:

Food security is essential for health, socioeconomic stability, and overall well-being, yet millions--including 14 million children in the U.S-- experience food insecurity. This narrative study explored the lived experiences of food-insecure families, focusing on economic factors, psychosocial impact, coping and adaptive strategies, parental perspectives, and their resilience in the face of adversity. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the study examines how families navigate food insecurity daily and what they wish educators understood about their challenges. Too often, assumptions and decisions are made without consulting those directly affected. This research amplifies the voices of three food-insecure families who highlighted their perspectives on the economic factors that contribute to their sets of circumstances, such as underemployment and limited access to nutritious and affordable food. It also explores the emotional toll of food insecurity and their resilience in overcoming these hardships.

Participants also identified the following needs: increased school-home partnerships, universal school-based meals for all students, and economic policies centered around building sustainable solutions to food insecurity and long-term well-being.

Additionally, their key recommendations for educators included fostering positive classroom environments and adopting asset-based advocacy that empowers students and promotes academic and personal growth.

These findings have far-reaching implications extending beyond education to inform social policies, community-based initiatives, and advocacy efforts to address food insecurity and its impact on families.
